Turkish paramilitary police shot at refugees attempting to run away from a checkpoint in southeast Turkey, leaving one dead and another one wounded, the Anadolu news agency reported on Monday. Gendarmes had stopped a small truck at a regular checkpoint on a road between the towns of Bitlis and Siirt finding 41 refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Two of the refugees attempted to escape and both were shot after gendarmes ordered them to stop, Anadolu said. It was not clear what the nationalities of the two men were. All the refugees are expected to be expelled from Turkey. Turkey is one of the main routes for Asian and Middle East people seeking to get into the European Union. According to Turkish law only refugees from European nations can apply for political asylum in Turkey.
