In response to an invitation of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has recently served as observer of the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly Elections during the period from 12-25 February. The OIC mission was led by Ambassador Boubakar Adamou, Director for African Affairs. The organization's monitoring of the dual Nigerian elections falls within OIC's continuous endeavor to promote democracy and good governance in Member States in accordance with its Charter, Code of conduct for OIC Election Observers and the 2005 Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. Assessing the event, OIC observers noted that the voting process was well-organized and peaceful, as Nigerian voters exercised their voting rights peacefully despite the outbreak of some isolated violent incidents in some places in the country. The OIC mission expressed its satisfaction at the peaceful conduct of the elections and extended congratulations to the people and authorities of Nigeria for their commitment to the democratic process and values.
