The United Nations on Thursday appealed for 82 million dollars from the international community to help 2.3 million hungry Kenyans affected by drought. The U.N.'s World Food Programme (WFP) said this year's long rains were poor in eastern, southern and some northern areas, resulting in almost the entire grain crop being destroyed in several parts of the country. Grain prices in Kenya have almost doubled while livestock prices have gone down. Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki in July labeled the situation a national disaster. The WFP has warned that if the short rains in October-December fail, 3.3 million Kenyans will be in need of food aid next year.
