Ethiopian and Sudanese cattle raiders attacked Kenyan herdsmen in a cross-border raid that killed 38 people in the remote and lawless northern region, local authorities said on Thursday. The raiders crossed over to Zoyea in the northern Turkana district on Friday, killed a herdsman and took his animals. They returned the following day but were repelled by local Turkana and security personnel. "Hundreds of raiders came to Kenya on Friday and fled with some animals," the District Commissioner for Turkana, Njenga Miiri told Reuters. "They returned the following day but were repelled by the locals and security personnel. In total, we lost eight people from the Kenyan side and 30 of the raiders were killed." Dozens have died and 3.5 million people are on the brink of starvation following three successive years of failed rains in Kenya which has forced President Mwai Kibaki to declare the drought a national disaster.
