At least 16 people were killed Sunday and 50 injured when the truck they were travelling in overturned on a curve and hit a barrier on the side of the road, police in the north-eastern Indian state of Meghalaya said. Several of the estimated 70 people riding on the open truck were flung into a gorge along the barrier near Nongspung village, West Khasi Hills district superintendent of police Sylvester Nongtnger said. All the dead and injured belonged to three villages in the area. "Initial investigations indicate the accident was caused by rash driving," Nongtnger said. The driver of the truck was among the injured, dpa reported.
