At least 49 people died in Pakistan due to heavy rains that started last week and continued through the weekend, an official said Monday, according to dpa. The majority of deaths and injuries were caused by collapsing houses. Eighty people were injured in the downpours. The south-western province of Balochistan was worst hit. The heavy rainfall started there on Thursday and later spread to other parts of the country, according to Ahmad Kamal, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority. Eighteen people died in Balochistan, 15 in the north-western tribal region, 10 in the eastern province of Punjab and six in the north-west Khyber-Pakhtunhwa province, Kamal said. Heavy downpours were expected to continue in northern Pakistan through Tuesday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said.
