He disclosed that as many as 56 touristy projects will be launched until 2010 in collaboration between the department of tourism and its partners, the Ministry of Labor and others in the field of local tourism. He voiced that 36% of air touristy flights in the Arab region are heading for Saudi Arabia, most of them for Hajj and Umrah, despite that the Kingdom is not considering the activity as part of tourism. However, out of which a sizable number goes on short and domestic flights, he said. He added that tourism in Arab countries siphoned as much as $40 billion, with the share of Saudi Arabia amounting to $16 billion. Speaking about the importance of benefiting from foreign countries experience in tourism support, he cited the experience of the once-neglected Turkish city of Antalya to the now-highly-developed touristy destination, the host of the conference. In this regard, he disclosed that his department is planning to develop 30 downtowns throughout the Kingdom, citing the development of an area of more than 50 sq. kilometers downtown the city of Riyadh, the capital.
