AlQa'dah 30, 1436, September 14, 2015, SPA -- The US will support Montenegro's bid to join NATO, US Vice President Joe Biden told Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic on Monday, dpa reported. The United States supports extending a membership invitation at the December meeting of NATO foreign ministers if Montenegro continues pursuing reforms and increases popular support for joining NATO, Biden said in a telephone call "The vice president and prime minister agreed that Montenegro's membership in NATO would firmly anchor Montenegro in Euro-Atlantic institutions, promote greater regional stability in the Balkans and demonstrate the credibility of NATO's Open Door policy," the White House said in a statement. NATO foreign ministers are set to decide in December whether to invite Montenegro to join. Montenegro is the smallest of the former Yugoslav republics and the last to split from Serbia, in 2006. The Adriatic republic with 620,000 inhabitants also seeks to join the European Union despite deep polarization within its population.
