Clashes between the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo and a rebel group in the country's east left 21 people dead, dpa cited the Congolese military as saying Monday. Army spokesman Victor Masandi said rebels of Allied Democratic Forces-National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU) attacked an army position overnight Sunday in the village of Kokola. The clashes resulted in the deaths of 16 rebels, four soldiers and a civilian around 40 kilometres north of the city of Beni.
