The government of Nepal has declared a state of emergency in the areas affected by the earthquake and has appealed to the international community for humanitarian assistance. According to dpa, the number of those killed in the 7.9-magnitude tremor has surpassed 888 in Nepal alone, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Laxmi Dhakal. At least 29 out of 75 districts have been affected by the quake. A ministerial cabinet meeting has decided to set aside 500 million rupees (5 million dollars) for the disaster emergency fund.
