AlHijjah 20, 1434, October 25, 2013, SPA -- The United Nations on Friday appealed for 46.8 million dollars in emergency assistance for victims of a powerful earthquake in the Philippines as the death toll hit 201, dpa reported. The magnitude-7.2 quake that struck in Bohol province, 640 kilometres south of Manila, on October 15 was the worst to hit the Philippines in two decades. More than 700 were injured, 10 still missing and feared dead, while some 340,000 were displaced by the tremor. Luiza Carvalho, UN humanitarian coordinator in the Philippines, said the emergency assistance would support government plans for temporary shelter, water and other relief supplies for the displaced. "People urgently require temporary and transitional shelter, to protect them from the elements," she said. "We are concerned for the most vulnerable, especially the well-being of women and children." The quake more than 54,000 homes, dozens of hospitals and government buildings, schools, roads and bridges. It also disrupted electricity and water supplies. -- SPA 10:33 LOCAL TIME 07:33 GMT تغريد
