At least 14 people were killed by landslides in Sri Lanka during floods that have displaced hundreds of thousands, local media reported Saturday. Ten deaths were confirmed in the Badulla district, 220 kilometers east of the capital, dpa reported. Officials said they feared several dozen people could have died in the mudslide that buried more than 100 homes in the district. An estimated 700,000 people have been affected by the floods and mudslides. Only 80,000 of those displaced had been moved into camps or temporary shelters provided by the government. The rest are with friends or relatives, according to officials in the affected areas. Heavy rains hit most of the country over the past week, forcing irrigation officials to open the sluice gates of more than 40 reservoirs.
