Thousands of people in Sri Lanka's eastern Batticaloa district have been affected by floods after heavy rains, officials said on Saturday. More than 18,000 families in Batticaloa have been affected by the floods following heavy rains, PTI quoted the Disaster Management Centre as saying. 655 families displaced due to the floods have been accommodated at six camps where relief supplies are being provided. Continues rain over the last few days also caused the opening of sluice gates of several tanks in north central province and the northwestern Puttalam district. Many parts of the country experienced heavy rains over the last few days. Last month, some 16,000 people were displaced due to floods in several parts of the country following heavy rains. Parts of the western, central, south and northwestern provinces were affected and nearly 300 houses also damaged due to heavy showers.
