U.S. stocks continued to rise on Tuesday as the Nasdaq Composite remained at its 14-year high, which was due to changes in inflation levels and the housing market. In U.S. economic news, the Commerce Department reported a 15.7 increase in beginning home construction for August, and a 33 percent rise in multi-family home construction. The U.S. dollar gained against major world currencies. Light sweet crude oil for September delivery closed down $1.93 to $94.48 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while gold fell $2.60 to $1,296.70 an ounce. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 80.85, or 0.5 percent, to 16,919.59. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 9.86, or 0.5 percent, to 1,981.60. The Nasdaq Composite Index continued gaining to 19.20, or 0.4 percent, at 4,527.51.
