U.S. stocks closed higher on Monday, as the Nasdaq Composite rose to its highest level since March 2000. The U.S. dollar gained against major world currencies. Light sweet crude oil for September delivery fell 94 cents to $96.41 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, while gold fell 0.5 percent, to $1,299.30 an ounce. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 175.83, or 1.1 percent, to 16,834.74. The Standard & Poor's Index advanced 16.67, or 0.9 percent, to 1,971.73. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 43.39, or 1 percent, to 4,508.31.
