Authorities in southern New Mexico said Tuesday that a biofuel facility is on fire near the town of Anthony, and the area around the plant was being evacuated. Dona Ana County officials said that they activated their emergency operations center and declared a hazardous materials emergency. County spokesman Jess Williams said that there is no word of any injuries so far, and the cause of the fire is not known. However, he said that there has been a series of small explosions. Fire crews from several agencies were on the scene, along with sheriff's deputies and New Mexico State Police. According to Williams, the plant is known to have large quantities of methanol and other fuels and chemicals.
