Avalanches in the mountainous region of Kashmir killed at least 11 people in India and four soldiers in Pakistan, news reports said Wednesday, after several days of heavy snow and rainfall. According to dpa, two Indian soldiers died when an avalanche hit an army camp in the remote Kargil district of the northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official told the IANS news agency. Three Nepali labourers were killed in an avalanche in another area of Kargil, he added. Also Wednesday in the district of Kulgam, around 110 kilometres to the south-west, four members of a family were buried alive by an avalanche and one woman died when her house collapsed under heavy snow. Another woman died in a house collapse in the nearby district of Shopian. Over the border in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, four soldiers died when their group was hit late Tuesday in Astore district, in the Himalayan region of Gilgit-Baltistan, the military said. The remaining 22 were rescued amid harsh weather conditions.
