Sri Lankan police on Wednesday arrested 75 people who were attempting to migrate illegally to New Zealand by boat, AP cited authorities as saying. The suspects were arrested early Wednesday in the seaside town of Beruwala following a tip-off, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said. Beruwala is about 56 kilometers (35 miles) south of Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo. The 60 men, nine women and six children who were arrested were to appear before a court, Rohana said in a statement. Hundreds of Sri Lankans try each year to leave illegally by boats for Australia, New Zealand and Europe looking for jobs, though in recent years Australia has been their favored destination.
