The Sri Lanka Navy has arrested 57 people, among them 10 children, who were attempting to enter Australia illegally by boat, dpa cited officials as saying Friday. A fishing trawler carrying the would-be immigrants was intercepted by a naval patrol off Trincomalee, 257 kilometers north east of the capital Colombo, on Thursday night, a navy spokesman said. Fifty-two of those arrested belong to the Tamil ethnic minority. It is the second-largest group attempting to migrate to Australia that has been arrested in the country this week. The number of Sri Lankans detected while attempting to leave for Australia by boat this year has exceeded 900, the majority of them being Tamils, police say. -- SPA
