The U.S. State Department welcomed the removal of the first amount of chemical weapons from Syria on Tuesday, as the materials have left the country on a Danish ship. "This represents continued progress toward the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons program," State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said during the daily press briefing, adding that "Much more needs to be done." "As the international community has made clear, it is the Assad regime's responsibility to transport these chemicals to the Latakia [port] safely to facilitate their removal," Psaki told reporters, adding that the United States expects them to meet their obligation to do so.
