AlHijjah 14, 1434, Oct 19, 2013, SPA -- Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Member States, has lauded the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's call to reform and enable the Security Council, effectively and practically, to carry out its duties and assume responsibilities towards maintaining international peace and security in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations. In a statement issued today by the GCC Secretariat General, Al-Zayani stressed importance of the Kingdom's call to achieve a fundamental reform in the system of the Security Council in a way to support the Council which is responsible of the main consequences of the global peace and security issues, especially that the world needs today of the Security Council's role and its legal legitimacy in light of expansion of political and security turmoil in the world. "Despite of position of the Security Council's membership at the international level, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's apology for not accepting the council's membership due to its inability to carry out its duties and assume its responsibilities, especially towards the Arab issues, stems from the Kingdom's historical keenness towards Arab issues and the stability of regional neighbors in addition to the Kingdom's care towards international issues and stability," the statement added. The GCC Secretary General said that the Kingdom's stance stressed its commitment to the international legitimacy and reflected its sincere desire to activate the role of the Security Council and the U.N. agencies and its various institutions in order to achieve global calls in this regard and make the world more cooperative, stable and secure.
