AlHijjah 12, 1434, Oct 17, 2013, SPA -- The United Nations General Assembly today elected the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Chad, Chile, Lithuania and Nigeria to serve as non-permanent member on the Security Council for two-year terms beginning on 1 January 2014. The five countries obtained the required two-thirds majority of those Member States present and voting in the 193-member Assembly. Elected in one round of secret balloting, they will replace Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo, whose terms will conclude at the end of this year. Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Abdullah Al-Mualimi said in a statement that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will contribute through this new responsibility to international peace and security, adding that the Kingdom's election is a reflection of its long-standing policy that supports moderation and resolves differences through peaceful means. Al-Mualimi also congratulated Chad, Nigeria, Lithuania and Chile on being elected as non-permanent member on the Security Council.
