AlQa'dah 27, 1432, Oct 25, 2011, SPA - Azerbaijan was elected Monday for a two-year term on the UN Security Council beginning in January, after defeating Slovenia in a competition for the seat reserved for Eastern Europe. After more than 15 rounds of voting, which began Friday in the UN General Assembly, Azerbaijan received finally 155 votes against Slovenia's 13 votes. The vote exceeded the required two-thirds majority of 128 to win the seat on the 15-country Security Council. The election of Azerbaijan completed the voting needed to fill five vacancies on the council, according to a report of the German Press Agency "DPA". Last week, the 193-nation assembly elected Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo. All five newly elected countries will begin their two-year terms on January 1, 2012. Each year, the assembly elects five new countries to replace the five countries whose terms expire at the end of December. They represent the world's five regions. The outgoing countries are Bosnia, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria. The UN Security Council in January will be composed of the five veto-wielding permanent members - the United States, Russia, China, France and Britain - and 10 elected members: Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal, South Africa, Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo.
