AlQa'dah 9, 1434, Sep 15, 2013, SPA -- Hurricane warnings were in effect Sunday for parts of western Mexico as Tropical Storm Manuel approached the southwestern coast, meteorologists said. As of 2 a.m. PDT Sunday, Manuel was 40 miles west of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, moving north-northwest at 8 mph, UPI quoted the National Hurricane Center as reporting. A hurricane warning was in effect for Mexico's Pacific coast from Lazaro Cardenas to Manzanillo and a tropical storm warning was in effect from Acapulco to east of Lazaro Cardenas. The hurricane center said Manuel would make landfall later Sunday and remain over land until it dissipates. Manuel could be a hurricane by the time it makes landfall Sunday, forecasters said. Tropical storm force winds reached as far as 265 miles from the center. Manuel was expected to dump 10-15 inches of rain in some parts of Oaxaca and Guerrero, possibly as much as 25 inches in some spots. The heavy rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, the hurricane center said.
