Police say an overcrowded taxi fell 150 meters (500 feet) into a gorge in the Indian portion of Kashmir, killing 11 people and injuring three others, according to AP. Zubair Khan, a senior police officer, says the driver lost control of the vehicle Friday on a steep bend on a mountainous road in Uri area, 110 kilometers (70 miles) west of Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir. Khan says the taxi was authorized to carry nine people but had more than nine passengers at the time of the accident. More than 110,000 people are killed every year in road accidents across India, according to police. Most accidents are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles. Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan.
