Three people were injured Saturday during the emergency landing of a passenger jet in Rome after its landing gear failed to deploy, dpa cited the Italian news agency Ansa as saying. The Airbus A320 with 172 people on board belonging to Hungarian airline Wizz Air was en route from Bucharest to Rome's Ciampino airport. It was diverted to the city's main Fiumicino airport, which has longer runways, when the crew was unable to release the wheelset under the left wing. The plane was immediately surrounded by emergency vehicles, which sprayed it with fire retardant. Passengers were evacuated from the plane using the emergency slides on the its right-hand side. Three were hurt during the procedure. Airport police praised the crew for their handling of the situation. The incident comes four months after an Alitalia ATR-72 turboprop plane crashed at the airport following landing gear problems, injuring 16 people.
