Many people were trapped alive under the rubble ofan eight-storey building two days after it collapsed near theBangladeshi capital this week, one of the rescuers said Friday according to dpa. More than 2,000 people have been recovered from the Rana Plazabuilding since it collapsed on Wednesday in Savar, around 25kilometres north-west of Dhaka, said Colonel Shiykh, one of therescue supervisors, who goes by only one name. He did not give an estimate of the number of trapped survivors. Optimism was boosted after rescuers freed 54 people alive from thedebris overnight, said Jahangir Kabir Nanak, junior minister forlocal government, rural development and cooperatives, speaking on theIndependent Television channel. Emergency teams have been trying to supply food and water throughgaps in the rubble. At least 275 people were confirmed killed since the building'seight storeys, and a ninth under construction, collapsed, crushing abank, shops, and several storeys of garment factories.
