More than 60 earthquakes rocked the Canary Island of El Hierro on Tuesday, dpa quoted Spain's National Geographic Institute as saying. The quakes, most of which registered between magnitude 2 and 3, went largely unnoticed by residents. More than 1,000 earthquakes have hit the smallest of the Canary Islands since March 18, with the strongest measuring a magnitude-4.1. Officials said the underwater quakes had their epicentre at 10 kilometres off the coast and did not represent a danger for El Hierro's 10,000 residents. Experts link the tremors to underwater movements of magma. In 2011, El Hierro experienced similar quakes prior to an undersea volcanic eruption, which occurred in October and lasted for five months. The eruption caused no injuries or significant damage, but hurt tourism on the island.
