Hundreds of earthquakes have been shaking the Spanish Canary Island of El Hierro, data issued by the National Geographic Institute showed Wednesday. According to dpa, about 580 earthquakes were registered from Monday to Wednesday. Thirty of them were greater than magnitude 3 on the Richter scale, a level at which they can usually be felt. Security officials linked the quakes to underwater seismic activity, saying movements of magma had been detected at a depth of 20 kilometres in the sea. They said there was no danger for the population.
