Police seized 585 kilograms of methamphetamines worth 438 million Australian dollars (451 million US dollars) in the biggest haul in Australia's history of fighting the trade in illicit drugs, dpa reported. "This is a hideous, insidious drug," New South Wales Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said Thursday. "This is the sort of drug that sends people mad." Three men - a 21-year-old Australian, a 32-year-old Singaporean and a 51-year-old from Hong Kong - have been charged and further arrests are expected. Scipione said the Asian Crime Squad were tipped off in September about consignments of the drug commonly called ice being shipped in by container from Shenjing in China. "We're very fortunate that somebody took the time to make that phone call," he said. The previous record haul of methamphetamines was 300 kilograms.
