AlHijjah 27, 1433, Nov 12, 2012, SPA -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Monday recognized the new Syrian coalition of opposition groups as "the legitimate representative of the Syrian people". "The GCC will offer support and assistance for the Syrian coalition in order to achieve the hopes and aspirations of the Syrian people," Secretary General of the GCC Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani said in a statement today. "The GCC hopes that this marks a step towards a quick transition of power, for the stoppage of killing of innocents, for the integrity of Syrian territories to be safeguarded and for a national conference to be held to pave the way for the formation of a state governed by law, and able to accommodate all Syrians without prejudice or discrimination," he added. He called on Arab nations and others to recognize the body, hailing Qatar's efforts under the leadership of Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani for hosting the talks that led to this historic development.
