U.S. stocks closed mixed Tuesday, as investors were encouraged by a better-than-expected report on the housing market. The dollar fell against the euro, the pound, and the yen. Light sweet crude oil for October delivery gained 86 cents to $96.29 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures lost $6.10 to $1,669.50 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 21.68, or 0.17 percent, to 13,102.99. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 1.14, or 0.08 percent, to 1,409.30. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 3.95, or 0.13 percent, to 3,077.14.
