U.S. stocks closed with modest gains Tuesday, as investors were cautious ahead of a European summit that will be held later in the week. The dollar was flat against the euro and the pound, but fell against the yen. Light sweet crude oil for August delivery rose 14 cents to $79.35 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures were down $13.50 to $1,574.90 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 32.01, or 0.26 percent, to 12,534.67. Exxon Mobil, General Electric, and Chevron were the leading gainers on the index. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 6.27, or 0.48 percent, to 1,319.99. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index increased 17.90, or 0.63 percent, to 2,854.06.
