Romanians began voting Sunday in a referendum on the impeachment of President Traian Basescu. More than 50 per cent of the 18.3 million registered voters need to cast ballots for a valid referendum, after which a simple majority would decide the outcome. About 9 per cent of voters had cast their ballots by 10 am (0700 GMT), three hours into the vote. Voting would continue until 11 pm. Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who entered office in April without elections, launched the impeachment procedure accusing Basescu of overstepping the legal limits of his authority, according to a report of DPA.
