NEW YORK — Right fielder Jorge Soler and third baseman Kris Bryant hit back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth inning as the Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 in National League Saturday. The game involved some drama a day after Cubs manager Joe Maddon criticized Cardinals reliever Matt Belisle for hitting first baseman Anthony Rizzo with a pitch. Both benches were warned after the Cubs' Fernando Rodney hit second baseman Kolten Wong in the eighth, the second time Wong was hit. Hector Rondon hit pinch hitter Greg Garcia in the ninth, resulting in Rondon and Maddon being ejected. Maddon said all were unintentionally hit. Nationals 5, Marlins 2: Right fielder Bryce Harper recorded a two-run homer and three RBIs as the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins. Washington (77-71) pulled to within seven games of the first-place New York Mets in the National League East. Jordan Zimmermann (13-8) allowed six hits and two runs with seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Diamondbacks 6, Giants 0: Center fielder A.J. Pollock, right fielder Ender Inciarte and left fielder David Peralta each had three hits as the Diamondbacks beat San Francisco. Third baseman Jake Lamb and shortstop Chris Owings also had two hits for the Diamondbacks as left-hander Patrick Corbin shut out the Giants on five hits over seven innings. Braves 2, Phillies 1: First baseman Freddie Freeman launched a two-run double off the top of the left-field wall in the eighth inning as the Atlanta Braves rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies. In other games it was: Reds 9, Brewers 7; Pirates 3, Dodgers 2; Colorado 10, San Giego 2. American League Angels 4, Twins 3 (1st game, 12 innings): The Los Angeles Angels had no run-scoring hits but pieced together enough offense to beat the Minnesota Twins 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader. All four runs scored by the Angels came via a sacrifice or a fielder's choice, including the game-winner in the top of the 12th inning when Daniel Robertson scored after a Kole Calhoun line drive was mis-fielded by Twins shortstop Eduardo Escobar and his throw home was late. Angels 5, Twins 2 (2nd game): Garrett Richards pitched 8-2/3 strong innings as the Los Angeles Angels claimed a 5-2 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Richards gave up just five hits and walked four while striking out seven in securing his career-best 14th win. Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6: Boston scored five times in the ninth, including a two-run homer from Jackie Bradley Jr., to beat the Toronto Blue Jays. Orioles 2, Rays 1: Chris Davis went 3-for-4 and scored the game-winning run while Chen Wei-Yin pitched seven strong innings to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 2-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Elsewhere it was: White Sox 4, Indians 3; Astros 10, Athletics 6; Rangers 10, Mariners 1; Tigers 6, Royals 5 (11 innings). Inter-League Yankees 5, Mets 0: Right fielder Carlos Beltran belted a three-run homer in the first inning while right-hander Michael Pineda combined with six relievers on a six-hit shutout as the New York Yankees blanked the Mets 5-0 in the Inter-League Saturday. — Agencies
