LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Angels got home runs from Mike Trout and David Murphy, while starting pitcher Nick Tropeano out-dueled Seattle's Felix Hernandez to beat the Mariners 4-3 in the American League Tuesday. Los Angeles (73-71) snapped a two-game losing streak and is now four games back of new AL West leaders Texas. Hernandez (17-9) had a three-start winning streak snapped, allowing four runs off five hits over seven innings. The long-ball was his nemesis, as Murphy gave the Angels a 3-1 lead with a three-run shot in the third inning and Trout hit his 36th home run of the season to put Los Angeles ahead 4-2 in the sixth. Royals 2, Indians 0: Kris Medlen pitched six strong innings and Alex Rios homered to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. In 6-1/3 scoreless innings, Medlen gave up five hits, with one walk and no strikeouts. Greg Holland pitched the ninth inning to pick up his 31st save. Rays 6, Yankees 3: Rays shortstop Nick Franklin hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to help Tampa Bay to a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees. National League Pirates 5, Cubs 4 (first game): Starling Marte's sacrifice fly in the eighth inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 5-4 victory over the Cubs in the first game of a doubleheader. With the score tied at 4-4, first baseman Pedro Alvarez drew a leadoff walk from reliever Justin Grimm (3-5) to start the eighth. Pedro Florimon ran for Alvarez, stole second and continued to third on catcher Miguel Montero's throwing error before scoring on Marte's line drive to left field. Cubs 2, Pirates 1 (second game): Jon Lester pitched a five-hitter, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and a split of a day-night doubleheader between National League contenders. Lester (10-10) pitched his first complete game for the Cubs, who signed him to a six-year, $155 million contract as a free agent in December, and 12th of his 10-year career. The Cubs (83-61) ended a three-game losing streak and got back within four games of the Pirates, who lead the NL wild-card standings.
