I am writing with regard to the article "Recruiters stop hiring maids from Bangladesh" (Sep. 1). No one should think that SR 700 a month is enough to hire a housemaid from countries like Bangladesh. Why would people be foolish enough to go to Saudi Arabia when they can earn the same amount in their own country? This is especially true when there is a chance of being faced with harassment, unpaid or delayed payment of salary, and being forced to work more hours than are stipulated in the labor contract. Dr. M. F. Kamal, Online response The article says that recruitment offices in Bangladesh are unable to provide the required number of housemaids. Perhaps, it could be that women in Bangladesh prefer to stay close to their families and are not thinking about making money overseas and facing possible abuse by their employers. Avid1111, Online response If I could reach the common people of our country, my suggestion to them would be that they should not to go to any country as a housemaid. This is not a dignified job. Performing such work can lead to the possibility of humiliation. It is better to find a job in the garment industry and to do some household work for payment in one's own country.
