MAKKAH — The municipality is using advanced technology such as solar-powered waste containers and golf carts to clean the streets of Makkah and the areas surrounding the Grand Mosque this year. Head of services at the municipality Abdulsalam Bin Sulaiman said Makkah receives a huge influx of visitors during Ramadan from within the Kingdom and abroad, all coming to perform Umrah during the holy month. “We are always keen about environmental cleanliness and the influx of people to the city will not compromise the municipality's vision of a clean city. Ramadan is known to be the most-crowded month in Makkah," said Bin Sulaiman. "The municipality has been working harder than ever to ensure that in every street and alley there is a cleaning team taking care of the waste,” he added. Mohammad Al-Mowariqi, director of cleaning, said the municipality formed teams to clean the main streets using both brooms and electronic vacuums. “We also clean the pedestrian walkways leading to the mosque, the central area of the city and the parking lots. We have gathered up to 30,000 tons of waste since the start of Ramadan,” said Al-Mowariqi.
