Gonzalez dazzles in Orioles' victory
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 16 - 04 - 2015

BALTIMORE — Adam Jones homered for the fourth time in five games, and starter Miguel Gonzalez struck out a career-high 10 batters in seven innings as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 in the American League Tuesday.
Gonzalez (1-1) exited the game with a 4-1 lead on the Yankees (3-5) who scored twice in the eighth.
New York starter CC Sabathia went seven innings and allowed four runs to take the loss to Baltimore (4-4).
White Sox 4, Indians 1: The Indians lost their starting pitcher two batters into the game, as Carlos Carrasco apparently avoided serious injury after getting hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of left fielder Melky Cabrera, and went on to lose to the White Sox.
Carrasco was taken to a hospital and treated for a jaw contusion.
Chicago (3-4) scored twice in that first inning and Jose Abreu homered in the fifth.
Rangers 8, Angels 2: Catcher Robinson Chirinos drove in five runs to back another strong outing from starter Nick Martinez as the Texas Rangers routed the Los Angeles Angels.
Martinez allowed one unearned run over seven innings for Texas (4-5) who beat Los Angeles (3-5) for only the second time at home in the last 12 tries.
Athletics 4, Astros 0: Kendall Graveman rebounded from a rough debut and four relievers helped preserve the Oakland Athletics' shutout over the Houston Astros.
Graveman (1-1), shelled in his Athletics (5-4) debut last week against the Texas Rangers, worked into the sixth inning for his first major league win.
Rays 3, Blue Jays 2: Steven Souza Jr. hit a long home run in the first inning, then scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly in the eighth after bunting for a single, and the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Toronto Blue Jays.
National League
Marlins 8, Braves 2: Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton broke his slump by going 3-for-3 with four RBIs in Miami's win.
Stanton, who had seen an 0-for-12 skid drop his average to .130, broke out and the victory was the first for the Marlins (2-6) over the Braves (6-2) after four losses in which they had scored just five runs.
Mets 6, Phillies 5: New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey tossed six innings and first baseman Lucas Duda delivered a three-run double in the second inning that gave the Mets the lead for good in their win over Philadelphia.
The Mets (5-3) have won three straight while the Phillies (3-5) have dropped three in a row.
Reds 3, Cubs 2: Anthony DeSclafani struck out five and allowed just two hits while the Cincinnati Reds held off a late Chicago Cubs rally.
Joey Votto went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the fourth inning where Cincinnati (5-3) scored three times.
Welington Castillo hit a two-run homer in the eighth for the Cubs (4-3) to cut the lead.
Padres 5, Diamondbacks 1: Odrisamer Despaigne held Arizona to one run on two hits over seven innings and left fielder Justin Upton hit a home run as the San Diego Padres defeated the Diamondbacks.
Despaigne, working in the rotation slot of the injured Ian Kennedy, needed only 84 pitches to complete seven innings in his first start — and first win — of the season for the Padres (5-4).
Rockies 4, Giants 1: The Colorado Rockies silenced the San Francisco Giants bats for the second game in a row, getting a combined six-hitter from six pitchers in a victory. Colorado moved to 6-2 while the Giants (3-6) lost their fifth straight.
Inter-League
Red Sox 8, Nationals 7: Scoring three runs in the seventh inning without recording a hit, the Boston Red Sox rallied for a wild win over the Washington Nationals.
Boston erased a 7-5 deficit by scoring twice on two errors on the same play by Washington reliever Blake Treinen. A groundout by shortstop Brock Holt drove in the winning run.
Other results: Tigers 2, Pirates 0; Dodgers 6, Mariners 5. — Reuters
