MAKKAH — The municipality here seized more than 5 tons of food products unsuitable for human consumption during the past week. Makkah Municipality Vice Head Abdulsalam Mushat said the municipality runs frequent inspection campaigns on all food establishments in the city. Last week's campaign saw the closure of 29 stores and restaurants, seizure of 5,307 kg of food and 80 liters of drinks unsuitable for human consumption either due to incorrect storage or because the products had expired. Municipality inspectors also seized 1,753 kitchen utensils and analyzed 220 samples of various food products. Mushat added the violations issued varied between unsanitary kitchens and workplaces, unhygienic workers, presence of insects and rodents and displaying food of unknown origins.
