With regard to the article "Jeddah needs pedestrian bridges: Experts" (Feb. 24), no one will deny that pedestrian bridges are necessary for the safety of pedestrians. But it is not only crossing roads that jeopardizes pedestrians. Trying to walk along the streets to reach a pedestrian bridge is an Olympic sport, with hurdles, such as the lack of sidewalks, holes, parked cars, rubble, waste and litter. Why not tackle the whole problem and make walking more attractive and safe for all pedestrians, not only those who are crossing the street. Walking in Jeddah is Russian roulette. The authorities should be aware that a pedestrian bridge or speed bumps are required near the International Indian School (Girls Section) on Prince Miteb Street (Arbaeen St.) as students and teachers find it very difficult to cross the road especially in the morning.
