MAKKAH — Security personnel detained an Umrah pilgrim for creating a commotion in the Grand Mosque by wearing striking clothes that drew the attention of many worshippers. Makkah Police spokesman Lt. Col. Ati Al-Qurashi said the man in his 40s wandered around the mosque wearing clothes resembling the Mameluke sultans, who ruled Syria and Egypt (1250-1517). Al-Qurashi added that big crowds gathered around the man to take photographs with him, creating congestion in the mosque. “Security personnel had made it clear to the man that his clothes were causing problems in the Grand Mosque and that he had to change them, but he came back the next day wearing the same clothes,” Al-Qurashi said. He added that police had no choice but to detain the man and refer him to the Bureau of Investigations and Public Prosecution for necessary action.
