I am writing with regard to the article "Enough about Saher, target the road terrors" (June 30). I agree that Saher is meant to increase road safety. Whether the speed cameras are hidden or visible, we all have to watch the speed limit even if there are no Saher cameras. But what I don't understand is if Saher is not meant for profit then why are the timers at traffic lights removed whenever Saher cameras are installed? There are many traffic signals which had functioning timers before Saher cameras were installed, but when Saher was installed, the timers were removed. If the timer is there, drivers will be know when the light is going to turn red, yellow or green and they will stop accordingly. Usama Shabandri, Online response II. Saher was set up to save lives by keeping careless and dangerous drivers in check. The only people who have complaints about Saher are those who have trouble abiding by traffic laws. These are the same people who vandalize Saher cameras on the roads, destroying government property because they intend to break the very laws the cameras were meant to uphold. The only ones complaining about Saher cameras are criminals. Donald D., Online response III. Saher cameras in hidden locations do not lead to better driving. They lead to more money for the traffic department and no change in the behavior of drivers. There is evidence that signs posted alerting drivers to the existence of cameras and painting the cameras so that they can be clearly seen leads to motorists reducing speeding and, therefore, reducing the risk of accidents. You do not reduce accidents by hiding cameras. You just make more money. Ibrahim, Online response
