Sad Saher stories
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 02 - 2014

I am writing with regard to the post “Saher is mulcting drivers” (Feb. 5). I was driving to Madinah and was strictly following the posted speed limit. Most of the time I was driving in the middle lane while in the fast lane, cars were passing at more than 140 km/hr. Many of these cars had gray tape on their number plates in order to escape from the Saher cameras. After two days, I got an SMS saying that I had crossed the speed limit. This shows that the Saher system is not penalizing the real offenders but those who are following the rules. I think they are sending an SMS to any car whose number plate they can see in the Saher picture as they are not able to catch the real offender. This is very sad indeed.

I had the same issue as Altaf. Last year I was driving at only 53 km/hr along Madinah Road in Jeddah and Saher fined me for speeding. I registered my complaint on the Saher website but I never got a response. Unfortunately, it was time for the renewal of my iqama so I had no choice but to pay the penalty.

You may not believe it, but last month I was crossing a traffic signal without a timer and the light which was green turned yellow as I was crossing and the lights of the Saher camera flashed twice. There was this guy in his car right beside me, maybe half a meter in front of me. It has been more than a month and I have not got a ticket. I believe that the other man might have got two whereas neither one of us should be penalized.
