MADINAH — Traffic police in Madinah said they impounded about 2,000 vehicles in the last two months for tampering with plate numbers and obliterating car serial number aiming to circumvent the Saher road surveillance system, said Brig. Muhammad Bin Ajlan Al-Shenberi, Director of Traffic in Madinah. He said the violators will be fined SR1,000 and their cars will be impounded for 15 days. The penalty will be doubled if the violation is repeated. The driver will also be held in custody in preparation to be referred to the traffic penal committee. Saher has been repeatedly attacked since it was introduced in Madinah. Those caught by the system smash the windows of Saher cars or verbally abuse Saher employees. Some angry drivers resort to violence to avoid the cameras. They shoot at Saher cameras and puncture tires of Saher cars. They also destroyed Saher vehicles throughout the Kingdom. Last year a youth threw an iron bar at a Saher car in Buraidah while driving at high speed. Also, angry drivers smashed Saher cameras in different parts of Madinah.
