RIYADH — The Shoura Council on Monday approved amendments in the Traffic Law with regard to the driving license fee and the period of its validity. Fahaad Al-Hamad, Assistant President of the Council, said that the Council endorsed amendments to Article 36 of the law under which the fee for the driving license will be SR20 per year. Article 41 of the law has also been amended. According to the amendment, the period of validity of the driving license for private vehicles and motor cycles will be from two to 10 years, and five years for all other vehicles. The Council, chaired by its President Sheikh Abdullah Al-Asheikh, approved the amendments after listening to the viewpoints of the members with regard to the amendments proposed earlier by Abdurahman Al-Anad when he was a member of the Council. Al-Hamad said the Council endorsed the viewpoints of the committee that driving of vehicle is a fundamental right of people who are eligible to drive, and that they are entitled to enjoy the right at affordable rates for the driving license. Al-Hamad said the Council also endorsed the proposal of the woman member Dr. Wafa Taiba, asking the Ministry of Health to establish specialized referral clinics for the elderly people, and train specialized medical and technical personnel in the field of geriatric medicine so as to enable them to work in such clinics.
