Flyers prevail over Jets 2-1
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 01 - 12 - 2013

PHILADELPHIA — Scott Hartnell and Sean Couturier provided the offense while Steve Mason stopped all but one shot as the Philadelphia Flyers skated to a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets Friday afternoon.
The Flyers (11-12-2) won their fifth straight game at home after dropping their previous two on the road at Florida and Tampa Bay and inching their way back into playoff contention following a 1-7 start.
Mason turned away 25 shots in the early matinee, including an impressive pad save on Matt Halischuk on a 2-on-1 Jets chance in the second. He improved to 3-0-1 in his career against the Jets (12-12-4).
Both Flyers goals came off Winnipeg turnovers.
Bruins 3, Rangers 2: Black Friday turned into Black and Gold Friday in the third period as the Boston Bruins scored twice to pull out a 3-2 decision over the New York Rangers.
Center Patrice Bergeron and defenseman Zdeno Chara beat goalie Henrik Lundqvist in the first 8:55 of the final period as the Bruins rebounded from Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Red Wings in Detroit by dominating the second and third periods.
Red Wings 5, Islanders 0: Center Darren Helm and right winger Daniel Alfredsson each scored two goals and goalie Jimmy Howard made 29 saves in a shutout as the Detroit Red Wings beat the slumping New York Islanders 5-0.
Right winger Gustav Nyquist also scored as the Red Wings (13-7-7) won their third in a row, a stretch in which they have outscored the opposition 14-2, and their fourth in five games. The victory also snapped a decade-long drought against the Islanders (8-15-3).
Ducks 5, Flames 2: Left winger Dustin Penner scored twice as the Anaheim Ducks continued their dominance of the Calgary Flames at Honda Center in a 5-2 victory.
The Ducks (18-7-3) won their 18th successive game at home against the Flames (8-13-4), who have not won in Anaheim since Jan. 2004. Anaheim also improved to 10-0-1 on home ice, where they remain the only side to avoid losing a game in regulation.
Penguins 3, Lightning 0: Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury had 21 saves to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Sharks 6, Blues 3: Right winger Brent Burns' first career hat-trick enabled the San Jose Sharks to beat the St. Louis Blues 6-3.
Capitals 3, Canadiens 2: Center Mikhail Grabovski scored to force overtime and then produced the winning goal in the shootout to lift the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens to snap a four-game losing streak.
Avalanche 3, Wild 1: Left winger Gabriel Landeskog scored a goal and set up goals by defenseman Jan Hejda and center Nathan MacKinnon as the Colorado Avalanche withstood a Minnesota Wild rally for a 3-1 victory.
Blue Jackets 4, Oilers 2: The Columbus Blue Jackets got a much-needed home win after scoring three second-period goals to pull away for a 4-2 result over Edmonton.
Other results: Devils 5, Hurricanes 2; Sabres 3, Maple Leafs 2 (OT); Blackhawks 2, Stars 1 (SO). — Reuters
