I am writing with regard to the report "Mumbai gang-rape suspects were feared in their slum home" Aug. 28. The gang rape of a 22-year-old photojournalist by five men in Mumbai is another blot on the face of India. The young lady must have experienced untold trauma and deserves the best medical and emotional support that is possible. It is commendable that the Mumbai police have apprehended all the culprits. They should be put on trial and the harshest punishment should be meted out to them for such inhuman crimes. The instances of the rape of women across India is giving the country a bad name across the world. According to statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau, rape cases in India have spiraled from 2,487 in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011, a tenfold increase. India was famous for its spiritual traditions, for the Taj Mahal and for Mahatma Gandhi's non-violence movement. Now, India is being called the rape capital of the world. The foreign media beams news of Indian gang rapes globally bringing shame to the country because of the actions of rapists. The punishment for rape has to be quick and strong, e.g. the death penalty, for this malady to be controlled in India. Rajendra K. Aneja, Dubai
