With reference to the article “US photojournalist reveals horrors of Syrian captivity” (Aug. 25). the rape of the 22-year-old photojournalist by the gang of five at a deserted textile mill in Lower-Parel in the heart of Mumbai on Thursday evening has created a fear psychosis in the mind of Indian parents. The incident is unfortunate and highly condemnable. The culture of rape has become well-set in the male psyche in India. The violence against women keeps continuing in spite of tremendous outrage displayed by the general public for the recent times. Its really a shame for Indian government and society that in 21st century women are unsafe. This country needs awareness and re-education on respect for women. Unless the existing laws are implemented seriously, nothing can be changed in the present society. The government of India should set an example by giving rapists exemplary punishment that would instill fear in the minds of those who think that they can get away with anything, including committing such a heinous crime. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, once said: “The day a women can walk freely on the roads at night, that day we can say that India has achieved independence”. Mir Gazanfar Ali Zaki, Jeddah
