Under the present Indian law, the minimum and maximum punishment for rape is below or above 10 years in prison which is not a deterrent for a criminal to commit the crime. And generally, rape cases are argued in court for years because the judiciary is saddled with a lot of work and judgment often comes very late. Sometimes, it comes too late that either of the parties involved in the case have died. Under the present circumstances, rapists don't fear going to jail because of the light punishment. They would only tremble if the punishment is death. Therefore, there is a need to make a law that would give rapists the death penalty. At present, we have DNA procedures and sophisticated forensic examinations to hasten the resolution of rape cases so delay in making judgement should not be an issue anymore. Unfortunately, the present Indian government has become so corrupt that it does not seem to have the time to take good measures to curb the incidence of rape in the country. In the recent controversial rape case, the sixth suspect is said to be a minor. According to the police, the minor, who was not charged in court, was among those who abused and tortured the victim with an iron rod that caused her death. As news reports said, the victim was gang-raped in a moving bus. It is a big shame if he gets away without being punished just because he is a juvenile. Every one would feel ashamed for such an unfair sense of justice. The message that rapists could get the death penalty should ring in their ears. Otherwise, every woman in India will continue to feel insecure and fear walking in the streets of the country.
